Prelest by Clouds Above Chaos

Prelest is the archived output of an installation conceived for, and performed at 2018's Hillscene Live festival in the Dandenong Ranges of Victoria, accompanied by compositions from the artists as individuals which, through no direct involvement, communicate similar themes.

Part 1-2 [Side A] comprises the Prelest recordings, for which a strict set of conditions were established: all material should be generated in real-time; the visual element was to be constructed in direct response to the aural component; attention should be directed towards building hypnotic aural/visual stimulus emulating the mystical experience of visionary states.

Part 3-4 [Side B] is a collection of recordings made by Clouds Above Chaos in their respective studios for their own edification and the exploration of their own mental processes.

The artistic intent of the release is to bring into question the validity of using modern methods of signal generation to induce hypnotic and mystical states of consciousness, and whether exploiting the human brains' tendency towards pareidolia and responding to sensory overload by entering into trance is a useful spiritual tool, or if it only leads to a state of spiritual delusion- the definition of Prelest itself.

The listener is invited to temporarily suspend their state of external distraction and listen to the output of these experiments at a volume level just below discomfort, in a state of either visual overstimulation by way of computer-generated geometric visualisations, or having deprived their visual senses entirely by way of sitting in a completely dark room or otherwise diminishing the visual faculty for the duration of the performance.
As an extension of the exercise, utilising a method of focus on the breath is also recommended for the duration in order to further align the experient with the desired field of subjective inquiry.

Chronophage by Various Artists

Slice is very proud to announce the 40th release by our label, a compilation we call “Chronophage”. Comprised of 20 pre-released tracks highlighting various eras of Slice and 20 more previously unreleased cuts from producers from Melbourne and Toronto! We’ve got 40 ways to close out the idiocratic hellscape that is 2020 with a diverse range of underground electronic music.

This year has been very difficult for everyone. In our circle and wider collective we have felt the lack of gigs, loss of jobs, financial stresses, and negative impacts the pandemic has had on mental and physical health. It has also been difficult for the music industry being relegated and delegitimised by governments and other so-called “authorities”.

This compilation is a celebration of art and artists everywhere; a tribute to what we bring to the world. The art and communities we create stand in stark contrast to the oppression and wilful destruction of the environment we face today.

Amidst the chaos, music has, and always will, help people get through the most arduous times.

Massive thanks to all the artists and our supporters over the years. Hope you enjoy the Chronophage.

Us by Jimmi-Woods, Arcane Trickster

Jimmi-Woods and Arcane Trickster team up for an excursion into Psy Prog and Trance with "Us" - a diverse three-track tribute to human strength in times of adversity.
This EP muses on the cosmic thread that binds Us together, that we are not a product of, or defined by the system we have created. We are inner and outa-dimensional beings, energy existing both here and now and light years beyond the solar system.
The exclamation of "Us" echo’s in our minds and out into deep space...

Residue by Geist Contagion

Hatched in 2018, Geist Contagion is the latest solo project from Jonathan Haus of the Toronto-based glitch band The Databats.

Geist Contagion’s second EP “Residue” is an experimental electronic journey through spaces, outer and inner, inspired by concepts such as communications intelligence, government mind control, and the degradation of our physical environments. The EP’s frenetic beats and soaring synths create a hypnotic atmosphere of modern ambivalence, mirroring our own frenzied lives in late stage capitalism.

Constructed utilizing a myriad of analog, digital, modular and virtual synthesizers, “Residue” weaves in and out of genres and conventions to create a retro, yet modern textile of experimental electronic music.

Winter Silence by Tok'ra, Psychoacoustic Vision

From the archives of Staefn's favourite unique productions comes "Winter Silence"!
A 2-track concept release of Tok'ra / Psychoacoustic Vision's latest manifestation of wildly psychedelic and masterfully progressive techno, now available on Slice Records.

There’s something strange about the caustic breeze at the Swamp Carnival tonight. The smell of mould overshadows your thoughts as garlands of blinking lights float above and ahead of you. Regardless, you enter the swamp towards the sound of distant horns. The dense cold liquid supports your body as you progress deeper, confused by the mechanical sounds sporadically occurring without any discernible presence. Small vibrations in the swamp begin to generate waves, hitting you in the face and blocking your vision from noticing the giant machine breaching the swamps' surface.
Distressing sounds radiate from its presence, something doesn't sound right. Is it communicating? Is it conscious? What is causing these broken sounds? The premonition that something is not right grows stronger. You turn around but the swamp is too thick- you can’t move. The sounds get more chaotic as the machine gets closer; its' oscillatory messages are making less sense as your mind breaks down. Disorientated from the unceasing sounds you give in, sucked into the swamp, struggling to keep your head up to breathe as you are being slowly dragged under. Your eyes open momentarily to see the machine extend itself to encompass you, engulfing you and claiming you as its' own. Everything turns black and you feel warm.
Slowly, you descend into winter's silence.

Winter Silence’s dark textures evolve, layering slowly as drums pulse ominously in the background, becoming louder as sirens blare only to disappear into themselves as the acid undertones rise in its wake. Your thoughts burrow into tunnels as the pitter-patter of unseen footsteps are heard all around you. You pause to gain your thoughts, to find an exit. The siren returns once more, embittered, angry, betrayed. You leave the tunnel but the siren gets louder.Your only choice is to turn back and follow the trails the acid left behind. The siren is antagonised.
The tunnels contract and close on you; as if they are alive. Your fading consciousness realises with muted horror that they have been waiting for you, and in some manner have been willed into existence precisely in order to consume you.
Satiated, these sentient hallways of darkness expand once more, as the silence of winter descends once again upon the landscape.

Caustic Grip - Toxic Rift

lice Records is proud to present our newest EBM Industrial release from Caustic Grip - Toxic Rift.
Naarm’s (Melbourne, Australia’s) Caustic Grip has been creating hard and dark rhythmically charged electro-industrial since early 2018 with a variety of releases produced since inception, showcasing the ever evolving sound of the project.

New EP TOXIC RIFT is a huge step in Caustic Grip’s aforementioned evolution!
A heady mixture of multiple Industrial genres, darkwave, electro pop, goth and electronic body music, the EP reaches dark new depths of sonic depravity, textural exploration and bleak lyrical imagery. A synth charged, boot stomping assault of harsh infectious rhythm, melodic hooks and baritone voice, TOXIC RIFT is here, drenched in sweat and wrapped in leather!

Featuring remixes from the beautifully dark stylings of Elenor Raynor of “Robots In Love” (Sobriquet, Keyboardist for Snog) and Experimental Industrial artist “ Fate Æffect”.

Son of Zev - Into the Wilderness EP

"Into the Wilderness" is Son of Zev’s second EP since moving out of the inner urban areas of Melbourne to the forested foothills of the Dandenong ranges.
This EP is a melding of Son of Zev’s industrial techno sounds with the space and elements experienced living in the mountains.
Blending acid, techno and industrial influences with his history in ethnomusicology and jazz, this EP stretches the Son of Zev into a deeper introspective zone, while maintaining a dance floor aesthetic.

Also featuring remixes from Ear Mind Eye and Sikander.

Ear Mind Eye - Sigh EP

"Sigh" is the first EP from Ear Mind Eye of original psychedelic music produced between 2015-2018. Writing & production of these beats draws inspiration from the Australian Doof scene and often took place in the the aftermath of parties in an effort to transmute the experience.

Ear Mind Eye is the conception of Canberra based producer and artist Cristian Crowley: An audio visual alchemist chasing frequencies and UFOs with a head full of the occult. Creating his own style of psychedelic music for the mushroom to be consumed under the stars and out in the sun. Hellbent on generating gyrations, sonic excitation and sensory awareness by redefining his own idea of "rave". The dosage is offered up through a melding menagerie of underground techno, progressive, uniquely tripped psy, infectious beats & charged breaks.

Jimmi-Woods - Biolume EP

Slice is very proud to announce our 28th release: Jimmi-Woods - Biolume.

Jimmi Woods' latest release progressive techno EP “Biolume” displays a deep, bright and chunky sound with an all encompassing psychedelic feel. Progressive in nature and expanding on influences from 90's house, through to modern techno, dub, minimal tech and psychedelic trance, Jimmi's work offers up a synthesis of genres which is intended equally to facilitate an oceanic feeling and to promote contemplation. Featuring two incredibly deft remixes from fellow Melbourne Producers “Ear Mind Eye” and “Tok'ra”, adds to this EPs unique and original flow - Biolume has it all.

All profits made from the sales of this EP will go to WIRES Wildlife Rescue that will go towards the Catastrophic fires, the worst drought in history and record high temperatures are taking a tragic toll on native wildlife.

From the producer:
"Biolume is a concept release addressing the reality of ecological collapse and challenging the listener to consider the validity of the sociopolitical constraints placed upon us.

In the last 5 years I’ve had to learn to do things differently. The toughest place I have been is being undecided as to who I am and what I want to be. I’ve had to learn what I am and what I am not. After everything had fallen away it gives me great pleasure that creating progressive landscapes in electronic music has stuck around and I love it even more than before.

I’d rather be in the flow of creation than in the turbulence of Indecisiveness. Now there is much more of a purpose in my creations; the production style and narrative created have much more of a positive environmental theme, advocating for active change and a push against the archaic political status quo.

Part of my metamorphosis has been to have the courage to step foot out across the canyon on to an unclear path. It has been necessary to stay as much as possible in the present moment and create not only my vision for my music but also create a new vision for myself. What is important right now is to promote positive change and I hope you will feel this comes across in my music.

If you like what you hear and would like to keep in touch with what I’m creating hit the like on my Jimmi-Woods page! I’d love to hear what you think of my new direction in music.” -Jimmi Woods

Studio Schizoid Neo-Luddite Samples I - Yamaha EM-90

One of Slice's founding members: Gareth Fox of Studio Schizoid has offered up a great Yamaha EM-90 Sample Pack that you can download for Free!

"Created in protest, the Neo-Luddite sample series is an exercise in preserving the heritage of electronic music whilst presenting it in a format which allows for full utilisation in a modern studio environment.

There's a reason that many electronic artists have retained a fascination with old analog gear: For all the progress we have made, there is something intangibly beneficial in working with the seething, transistorised sound of old drum machines.

Many dollars have been spent on recreating the unpredictable output of these devices, and many musicians (including myself,) have spend exorbitant amounts of money on simulations of technology which by all rights, with a bit of patience and care, can be rescued from the scrap heap and pushed into service by those with the time and inclination.

Their reward is an intangibly superior sonic pallette to work with- deeper, less harsh and somewhat organic rhythmic elements which augment and enhance the digital aspect of their productions.

Included in this pack are 1460 one-shot samples of the drum machine section of the EM-90, seperated into three sections- 50% volume, 70% and running at full tilt. As you'll hear, the increases in volume result in a fierce yet contained distortion which, when combined with further dynamics processing, yields everything from tight, bouncy house kits to sub-killing techno, and beyond into the wonderful world of hardcore, speedcore and breakcore.

Vast amounts of samples of the individual hits are provided here, with the intent of providing those with a predisposition towards complex multi-sampling methods a fully-featured set of transistor drums to be loaded into their sampler of choice- eg, take 20 of the hi-hat hits, which initially sound identical, assign them to a single key and instruct your sampler/software to pick a random hit each time the key is triggered.

In that way, the very subtle differences between each burst of noise can be brought into your tracks and mitigate the need to spend uncomfortably large amounts of money on 'VA' VST instruments-- which do exactly that and not much else.

Sampled and compiled by Gareth Fox @ Studio Schizoid, Victoria, Australia
Feedback most welcomed, and please share what you've done with these samples- I'd love to hear it!"

Acid Slice is a celebration of everything Acid, Acid House, Acid Techno, Braindance, IDM, electro, footwork and every other genre that embraces the fabulous silver box, the Roland TB303.
Acid Slice is Melbourne's only 303% Acid Music night.

These live acts range from local legends of acid such as Honeysmack to fresh acts looking to get their acid on.
These live acts are supported by a stellar lineup of DJs who share their love of the acid sound.
This is not another techno night. Head down to Acid Slice and get a taste of all things acid.

featuring...
Live - ACM (Stable Music)
Melbourne local ACM, is known by many for his inspired, all hardware, live techno performances. Often playing with an element of improvisation, ACM keeps each set unique
and in the moment. ACM crafted his musical palette through his residencies as a DJ, playing house and techno at some of Melbourne’s most prominent nightspots. Those early days built the foundation for ACM’s live performance and production. A respected artist in the Melbourne techno scene for his experimental nature, ACM’s style is matured and characterised by his groovy bass lines, legato leads, and dreamy arpeggios.
Having supported some of the most revered names in house and techno, ACM aims to captivate his audience by drawing on his experiences as a DJ to tailor his sound live for the dance floor. With his execution thought out to the final reverberation, each element has its place in ACM’s live set.

Live - Tangent
Reuben Cumming, aka Tangent, is a newcomer to the Melbourne Techno scene with a huge love for polyrhythms and the squelch of a 303.
Previously, Reuben has worked as a sound engineer, sound designer and musician in both theatre and live music, having studied guitar and west African rhythms from a young age.
After years of performing in bands, his interest in technology combined with the frustration of being limited to a single instrument led him to live guitar looping and eventually, to creating live techno.
Reuben’s eyes were opened to the world of electronic music by artists such as Radiohead, Omar S, Honeysmack and particularly Four Tet’s productions and live performances, drawing him to live techno and producing dance music.
His love for techno was cemented when he discovered acid house and the sound of the Roland Tb303.
In his current live and hybrid sets, Reuben goes on an energetic, unpredictable and often improvisational tangent of techno which has been built from years of knob twiddling and party DJing.

DJ Set - Lani G (Bass Station)
Known for her infamous Madasss warehouse parties and smouldering sets. Lani G has been a stalwart on the Australian underground scene for the last 21 years.
Starting out playing gabba of all things, Lani has come along way and only now feels she’s truly solidified her sound. Dj’ing and producing sharp, deep and dark techno and house.
Having supported the likes of Phil Hartnoll (Orbital), Shakta, Eric Powell, Mike Dearborn, HMC, Woody McBride, Paul Mac and more. This Melbourne rave queen is set to take you on a journey through a hard soundscape, where acid riffs go to feast.

ap050918 by iderdown

Slice Records is proud to announce its 22nd release - ap050918 by Iderdown. This is a musical piece written in four movements for a performance at Toronto's long running electronic music monthly: The AMBiENT PiNG.
ap050918 was created to bring the iderdown aesthetic to a more melodically meditative narrative.
This EP offers beautiful live electronic ambient soundscapes, both blissful and emotive, captured during a home performance.

Highs and Lows

Slice Records presents Highs and Lows, Parts 1-6 by Lonely Faces.

Music inspired by movement. Dancing, flying, train travel... Michael Baum, aka Lonely Faces, takes an intelligent approach to electronic composition, creating techno favouring the use of analog equipment and traditional methods of sequencing.

Appreciated through headphones or blasted from a sizable sound reinforcement system, Highs and Lows Parts 1-6 has been engineered to accompany your journey. What ever your mode of transport.

Available on SpotifyBeatportiTunes and heaps more places.

Also available from our friends at Tempest Recordings is Lonely Faces "Silver Moon' LP, an aural experiment on classic analogue synthesizers, heavily influenced by classic techno and electro sounds.
